This Moment Matters: Designing Learning Systems for the Futures of All Students
Tuesday August 11, 2026 9:00am - 9:45am EDT
New York State is at a pivotal moment in the evolution of public education. As schools prepare students for a future that is increasingly complex, interconnected, and rapidly changing, the question before us is no longer simply What should graduates know and be able to do? Rather, it is How do we design learning systems that ensure every student can thrive in their future?
At the center of this work is New York's emerging Portrait of a Graduate—a shared vision for the knowledge, skills, mindsets, and experiences all students need to contribute, adapt, and flourish in a changing world. Developed through statewide collaboration and human-centered design, the Portrait serves as a foundation for reimagining educational systems that are more coherent, equitable, and future-focused.
In this keynote session, Dr. Jonah Schenker will explore the story behind New York's Portrait of a Graduate, how it was developed, and why it represents much more than a graduate profile. Participants will examine how the Portrait can serve as a catalyst for designing learning systems that align experiences, competencies, opportunities, and supports around the futures we want for every learner.
Through storytelling, reflection, and practical examples, attendees will explore:
  • What a Portrait of a Graduate is and why it matters
  • How New York's Portrait was developed through statewide collaboration and human-centered design
  • Why preparing students for the future requires rethinking systems, not simply adding initiatives
  • The relationship between learner outcomes, competencies, experiences, and opportunity
  • How districts can use the Portrait as a north star for vision, governance, planning, and innovation
  • The connection between Portrait of a Graduate work, career readiness, deeper learning, and student agency
Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how a shared vision for student success can guide the design of educational systems that ensure all learners graduate prepared not only for college and careers, but for purpose, contribution, and lifelong growth.
Key Takeaway:
The future is not something students enter after graduation. It is something our educational systems help shape every day. This moment matters because the decisions we make now will determine whether every student has access to the experiences, opportunities, and support needed to thrive in the futures they choose.
